TRUE STORIES
💔💫 The Day I Stopped Running (And Started Living)
By someone who’s moved more times than a UPS truck.
I’ve run from a lot of things in my life.
From arguments. From new experiences.
From change. From feelings. From myself.
I don’t mean that metaphorically. I literally ran. I’ve moved more than 40 times. I wasn’t in witness protection. I was in panic protection.
You see, for most of my life, I lived with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. That meant I was anxious almost all the time.
-
New situation? Cue the shallow breathing.
-
Unexpected change? There goes my neck locking up.
-
Conflict? Internal DEFCON 1.
And when I say “I couldn’t breathe,” I don’t mean in the poetic sense. I mean I literally couldn’t breathe.
But the real turning point came on a weekend when I wasn’t running — I was actually working.
I’d been invited to lead a workshop for foster families (a cause close to my heart — I’m a former foster child myself).
The workshop was electric. We had parents crying, sharing, laughing, and having breakthroughs. One mom nearly broke down in front of me.
“I don’t know what else to do,” she said. “He screams, he breaks things, he refuses to listen… I feel like I’m losing him.”
Her voice cracked. But I could hear the love under the exhaustion. The desperation of someone who wants to do it right.
I knew that pain.
Not just from working with families — but from living in the eye of emotional chaos myself.
So I gave them what I do best:
💡 Clarity.
🧭 Vision.
🔧 Strategy.
I explained that these kids aren’t “bad.”
They’re scared.
They’ve been shuffled, broken, moved, and confused so many times that their fight/flight/freeze is just trying to keep them safe.
And unless you replace those fear-based beliefs with something stronger, those tantrums will keep repeating.
I gave the parents three powerful strategies to transform the chaos.
And their faces lit up like sunrise.
Nods. Smiles. Tears. Hugs.
Some said they’d never heard anything like it before — but that it rang true.
It felt amazing to be of service.
But… deep down?
🥴 I was unraveling.
Not because the workshop went badly.
Because it went great.
I was standing on the edge of success, and my anxiety whispered:
“You don’t deserve this. You should leave before you ruin it.”
So I almost ran. Again.
I was in Monterey Bay, surrounded by beauty, opportunity, relaxation — and I was about to throw it all away and drive home.
Why?
Because I didn’t know how to stay with joy.
Because for all my wisdom and training, I was still chained to limiting beliefs that said:
“Success is unsafe.”
“You don’t deserve peace.”
“Don’t trust the good — it never lasts.”
But that time, something changed.
I called my coach.
Doc.
Doc didn’t tell me to just “think positive.”
He walked me through the patterns. The pain. The subconscious traps I didn’t even know I’d set for myself.
He helped me clear out the emotional landmines I’d been stepping on for years.
We rewired my nervous system to believe:
“I’m safe.”
“I can handle this.”
“It’s okay to feel good.”
And guess what? I didn’t run.
I stayed.
✨ I walked the beach.
🍽️ I ate the fancy food.
🛍️ I explored the little shops like a local who belonged there.
And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t just survive a weekend —
I enjoyed it.
